Anyone who’s ever frequented the forums over at acidplanet.com may be familiar with the process of 8-pack battling. For those who aren’t, here’s a quick summary–Acidplanet releases an “8-pack” of loops every week (more like 20 loops, these days), for free download. Members of the AP forum take these loops and attempt to create songs out of them, using nothing but the loops themselves and various effects. They then post the songs to the forums in 1v1 battles, and people vote on which song they like better in the battle forum.

This week’s 8pack, “Why Question Mark,” kinda sucked, at least for a heavily electronica-focused musician like me. The drums were garbage, and there weren’t any nice long single-note stretches for me to mangle. This is what I’ve come up with, though, and I think it’s got some merit. I actually only used a few samples from the pack….and I bet nobody can guess which ones they were! (okay, the drums should be easy enough, but the melodics?)

This song is called “I Hate the Status Quo,” and you can play it here:
